Utilized by physicians and mid-level providers at the point-of-care to rapidly and accurately document and submit charges, adoption of MedAptus’ Professional Charge Capture solution improves compliance with billing regulations, decreases administrative burden, and enhances reimbursement.
Benefits - The MedAptus Professional Charge Capture solution was designed by a team of physicians and technologists focused on creating a comprehensive, yet easy-to-use application. No other product offers the depth and breadth of coding intelligence and patient management tools, not to mention potential for revenue enhancement.
Select Features - The system offers its users a number of customizable options so that individual workflow is always supported, which yields high adoption. In addition, Professional Charge Capture supports the creation of custom rules, facilitates care team communication, and includes a companion Web application for real-time reconciliation.
How it Works - Professional Charge Capture can be interfaced with any scheduling or registration system to obtain patient lists. As clinicians see patients, charges are entered electronically with the aid of quickpick code lists and one-million coding rules. Upon charge completion, data is made available to administrative staff for final review.
System Extensions - A variety of system extensions are currently available for users of Professional Charge Capture. These include integrated dictation for rapid encounter documentation, a reporting module capable of analyzing captured data numerous ways, and several clinical tools to help streamline and improve care delivery.
The Bottom Line
The adoption of MedAptus’ Professional Charge Capture has been demonstrated by independent parties to result in sustained annual revenue improvements ranging from $10,000 - $20,000 per clinician-user. Larger practices have experienced ongoing annual revenue improvements that are measured in
millions of dollars.
Benefits
- Reduced missing charges – paper encounter forms are eliminated
- Faster time-to-billing – handoffs to and from administrative staff are reduced
- Improved accuracy – embedded intelligence prompts appropriate coding
- Fewer denials – potential errors are flagged and fixed prior to submission
Professional Charge Capture enables clinicians to manage schedules, review patient demographics and problems, and document new procedures and diagnoses with the benefit of embedded coding intelligence. Over one-million industry standard (Correct Coding Initiative, Local and National Coverage Determinations, and Medicare), proprietary (age, gender, date checking), and custom rule sets – the most available in any charge capture system on the market today – drive appropriate, accurate and timely coding.
While MedAptus is well-known for its handheld-based solution, today’s eighth-generation offering can also be deployed Tablet PCs or desktop computers. This Web-based solution, Physician Workstation, was designed to closely mirror our handheld-based software in terms of robust functionality and overall clinician-user experience. Physician Workstation is also completely interchangeable with the mobile version of Charge Capture, giving physicians hardware flexibility based on care setting, rounding needs, and usage of other clinical systems such as EMRs.
Professional Charge Capture also allows for a high degree of user-customization allowing close mapping to a clinician's unique practice pattern. In addition, administrator-controlled organization of patient data allows physicians to manage patient care collaboratively, and review patient history efficiently.

How it Works
The typical MedAptus implementation consists of interfaces (via HL7) to and from a practice’s scheduling, hospital, billing and/or electronic medical records systems. Currently MedAptus interfaces to more than 35 distinct systems from vendors such as Misys, athenahealth, GE Healthcare, McKesson, Cerner, Siemens and Epic. These data feeds operate in real-time, providing for an accurate patient census and ensuring that captured charges are submitted rapidly, typically on the same day of service.
The MedAptus Professional Charge Capture solution also offers a companion desktop-based application,
Workflow Manager. Workflow Manager is used by practice coding and billing staff to review submitted physician charges prior to transmission to the billing system, to reconcile charges with visits, and to communicate with clinicians.
