MedAptus, Inc. | Solutions | EMR Enhancement
While an automated charge capture module is typically offered as a component of the vast majority of EMR systems, rarely do any match the robustness of the MedAptus Professional Charge Capture solution given that revenue cycle management is simply not a core competency of most EMR vendors. Given this reality, MedAptus provides options for groups interested in the best of Charge Capture as well as the best of clinical automation.

Benefits - Thought most charge entry modules embedded within electronic records systems can return a financial benefit over time, only MedAptus’ powerful, eighth-generation Professional Charge Capture solution is capable of delivering enough cash to make an ROI happen in the first year of deployment. Beyond enhancing revenue, the system also yields compliance gains that EMRs were simply not designed to provide.

How it Works - For groups that have records systems implemented or are contemplating an EMR purchase, MedAptus offers a number of different options for achieving EMR enhancement. For some physician practices, it makes most sense to start with Professional Charge Capture in order to generate the revenue for a system purchase.

For those that have an EMR in place, MedAptus can be integrated with the existing system to assess entered charges for appropriateness prior to transmission for billing. Or, for those that want the full power of Professional Charge Capture, the solution can function in an interoperable manner with the EMR, via single sign-on, yielding the best of clinical and financial benefit.

The Bottom Line
While EMR systems are very good at automating clinical tasks, they historically are limited when it comes to yielding significant revenue enhancements. However, by deploying MedAptus’ practice-proven Professional Charge Capture alongside a clinical system physician groups can experience dramatic and rapid financial benefit with little impact on workflow.

Benefits
  • Implementation of MedAptus prior to that of an EMR system can enable a self-funded pathway to finance the EMR purchase
  • Integration of MedAptus with an existing EMR drives compliance gains that would be otherwise missing given MedAptus’ unparalleled coding intelligence
  • Interoperability of MedAptus with an existing EMR preserves patient context during the documentation process, streamlining both charting and charging tasks
  • Regardless of approach, the addition of Professional Charge Capture to an EMR yields a rapid ROI that is measured in months of utilization, not years

As EMR systems are complex and encompass a physicians’ end-to-end workflow, they typically require a significant investment for a group practice, especially when compared to other systems such as scheduling or billing technologies. EMRs do however eventually lead to some degree of financial benefit for a group, largely due to cost savings from items such as reduced chart pulls and their associated file storage space, and eliminated transcription time.

In terms of driving revenue, EMRs that offer a charge capture module can deliver financial gain based on potential coding improvements and the elimination of paper-based encounter forms. Unfortunately, an EMR’s ability to deliver a significant increase in cash to a practice is limited by the depth of knowledge and experience required to bring a robust, comprehensive, practice-proven financial solution to market.

Many healthcare organizations have come to realize that the implementation of an EMR system does no preclude the implementation of MedAptus, and vice-versa, as the two solutions are highly compatible from both usability and technology standpoints. In fact, the addition of MedAptus’ revenue-enhancing Professional Charge Capture tool to an EMR system drives impressive cash results.

How it Works
While a fiscally prudent, stepwise approach to EMR adoption that leads with Professional Charge Capture can essentially self-fund the EMR pathway, many groups with current records systems choose to explore a secondary implementation in order to harness money that EMRs continue to leave on the table. Implementation options for these groups are:

System Integration – In this approach, groups utilize their EMR for charge entry - no front-end or graphical user interface changes are required. What this means is that a physician documents the patient encounter, including procedure and diagnosis codes, once, in the EMR and then a real-time interface transmits the charge portion to the MedAptus Workflow Manager. At this point, over one-million coding and compliance rules are applied, assessing the charge for appropriateness. If the charge contains coding errors, it is placed in a hold queue where it is accessed and reviewed by coding staff for amending and/or approval. Once approved, charges are transmitted to the practice’s billing system.

MedAptus currently integrates with the Misys EMR system, the EpicCare® EMR system from Epic Systems Corporation, and Cerner’s CoPath solution, though this model is achievable with any clinical information system given MedAptus’ unparalleled interface engineering capabilities and industry relationships.

Full System Interoperability – MedAptus’ EMR Interoperability approach was designed for physician practices using an EMR for order entry and access to data such as patient history and lab results – essentially all of the standard EMR functionality, with the exception of documentation. As the core application to MedAptus’ EMR Interoperability option, its Physician Workstation affords users the same depth and breadth of benefits as does MedAptus’ popular handheld-based version of Professional Charge Capture. These include access to physician-designed code shortcuts to facilitate rapid charge creation, the MedAptus real-time rules engine comprised of over one-million coding and compliance rules aimed at yielding maximum reimbursement, and access to patient census lists in both outpatient and inpatient settings to ensure that no charge opportunities are missed.

Deploying MedAptus in an interoperable fashion with an EMR allows physicians to take full advantage of the above features with only very minor adjustments to existing workflow. Robust Charge Capture functionality is only one ‘click’ away from the patient record allowing fully compliant and streamlined charge entry to be completed in a matter of seconds, while patient context is preserved.

The MedAptus EMR Interoperability approach has been successfully deployed at a the prestigious Dana-Farber Cancer Institute where clinicians use the Partners HealthCare LMR records system, as well as at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
