Over the last several years, the change in infusion services billing regulations has been brisk, pushing the selection of codes and services out to the front line — the infusion nurses. The typical response has been to craft encounter forms with billing algorithms that attempt to recreate billing rules. Of course the overhead associated with this imperfect process is significant: forms development, nurse training, and compliance monitoring. These are the reasons MedAptus developed its automated Infusion Services Module.

Benefits
  • Helps translate complex and ever-changing infusion services billing regulations into adoptable, electronic workflow
  • Reduces administrative burden on nurses, allowing them to maximize patient care time
  • Supports the delivery of infusion services in both low and high volume clinic settings
  • Includes an intelligent rules engine that assess entered data for appropriateness, ensuring optimized reimbursement

Overview
MedAptus’ Infusion Services Module (ISM) was designed in cooperation with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to directly address this situation through the use of technology. Our solution removes the coding burden from front-line nurses, allowing them to focus on what they do best – the competent, compassionate delivery of care. Using MedAptus' ISM, nurses need only enter the services performed and the system translates the input into accurate, compliant codes. And if your infusion center has a clinical documentation system, the ISM can be interfaced to it so that the input burden can be even further reduced.

Care delivery in the infusion setting is often collaborative and can span over multiple shifts. MedAptus’ ISM was built to support collaborative workflow and handoff from the ground up. Before a single line of code was written, we interviewed nurse clinicians and directly observed the variety of workflows at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s three busy infusion centers. This information gathering was crucial to create a product that can effortlessly support capture of infusion charges in a high volume, high acuity setting.

There is also tremendous power behind the scenes for coding and administrative personnel. Since the ISM is a component of the Facility Charge Capture product, it enjoys the same close integration with the hospital charge master. This allows administrative personnel to instantly project current charge master codes to the point-of-care. Additionally, intelligent rules analyze submitted charges for completeness and accuracy as well as preventing common sources of revenue loss related to selection of primary service code. And as with all MedAptus revenue cycle tools, the ISM presents a real-time dashboard of charge opportunities allowing rapid reconciliation and identification of missing charge opportunities.
